Mafia II (or Mafia 2) is an open-world action adventure computer game combining a car simulator and a third-person shooter developed by the Czech company 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks); sequel to the game Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. The game was released on August 24, 2010 (August 27 - in Russia) on a personal computer (Windows) and Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles; released for Mac in 2011. The foreign publisher is the American company 2K Games; in Russia it was published and translated into Russian by the company 1C-SoftKlab.

Mafia II takes place in 1943-1951 in the fictional American city of Empire Bay with a population of seven million [42]. The city is run by three main mafia "families": Vinci, Clemente and Falcone.

The main character, Vito Scaletta (full name - Vittorio Antonio Scaletta), moved with his family from Sicily to the USA as a child. As a boy, Vito thought that in America all his dreams would come true, but in reality everything turned out differently. His father, Antonio Scaletta, an honest worker, worked in the port, receiving pennies for his labor, which were often spent in a tavern. A few years later, Antonio, it is believed, being drunk, fell into the water and drowned. Vito's mother, a godly elderly woman worried about her son, works as an assistant to the monk at the local church.

At school, Vito befriended another boy, Joe Barbaro, a well-known bully in the area. Both of them were from poor families, therefore, having become best friends, they quickly became addicted to the basics of banditry - pickpocketing, robbing shops, etc.

Once grown up Joe and Vito decided to rob a jewelry store. The first serious case was not entirely successful: a policeman noticed them. Vito was caught and Joe escaped. There was World War II, volunteers were needed at the front, so Vito was given a choice. Between prison and war, he chose war, as a result of which he was sent to the front, as a paratrooper in the 504th Parachute Regiment.
