They recognized the game's superiority over the second installment, and mainly praised it for its open world, improved visuals, and improved character behavior. Among the main shortcomings, it was noted the presence of many so-called "blank buildings", inside which it is impossible to observe the actions of the characters if they enter the building, as well as the quality of the graphics, which did not improve in comparison with the second part.

For example, in the first week after the release of the third simulator, 1,4 million copies were sold. At the same time, The Sims 3 broke the record for the number of pirated copies downloaded to the Internet two weeks before the official release of the game.
