Development began in September 1954. For many components and assemblies, the new medium tank was unified with the experienced T96 heavy tank. A total of nine vehicles were produced, of which five were equipped with a 90 mm gun, and four were planned to be equipped with a T96 tank turret and its 105 mm gun. However, due to the unavailability of the T96 towers, it was decided to temporarily equip two tanks with serial M48A2 turrets with an M41 rifled gun. These vehicles were produced in May - July 1957 and received the designation T95E2.
