How exactly the future ruler makes it into the elite is up to the player to decide. The option is selfless: donate food to starving townspeople, rescue elven maidens from dungeons and return stolen statues. The option is vile: row for yourself, spit on other people's destinies for the sake of the clinking of coins, and kill everyone you meet (don't worry, they are always reborn). Those who choose the second method grow spikes on their armor and a gloomy halo; their home begins to resemble a true abode of evil. In other words, the differences are in the “cosmetics” and two opposite endings.
