The game takes place after the end of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The battlefield is littered with dead fighters. At the top of the pyramid, two remained - Shao Kahn and Raiden. The Emperor defeats Raiden - he throws him aside, and Raiden's medallion is broken. Raiden manages to collect the fragments of the amulet and plant a spell in them, while Shao Kahn pulled out a hammer to deliver the final blow. Kahn brings Raiden to his knees and swings his hammer, but Raiden, after completing the spell, sends a message to himself in the past: “He must win!” Before the Emperor's hammer descends on him. The message successfully reached Raiden around the time the first tournament began (Many characters from the entire trilogy appear on it, and even Quan Chi, which is a retcon). Upon receiving it, Raiden is at a loss because a crack has appeared on the medallion. After that, the entire storyline from the beginning of the first tournament follows a completely different path. Visions appear before Raiden, through which he learns what will happen in the future, and tries to change it.
