Metal Drift is an arcade simulator with first-person shooter elements. The player controls an anti-gravity fireball (in the terminology of the game - a "tank"), equipped with one or another type of ammunition and weapons. The object of the game is to capture the magnetic ball and deliver it to the opponent's goal zone, overcoming the opposition of the opponents. The competition involves two teams, each of which can have up to 6 participants. The venue for the matches is a dedicated stadium, where landscape elements can be positioned according to one of five available configurations.

Player activity (destroying cars, scoring goals, etc.) is rewarded with experience points. As they accumulate, the player's level increases (which opens up access to new types of weapons and additional capabilities) and the destructive power of the weapons used. When players reach level 40, overall progress stops. In addition, during matches, successful defeat of enemy tanks replenishes the car's energy reserve, which can be used for short-term acceleration or to increase damage from weapons.

There are no significant differences between single and multiplayer modes. By creating his own game, the user can determine the duration of the match, the configuration of the stadium, the number of participants and the level of artificial intelligence of the tanks controlled by the computer. Network play is possible both within a local area network and on the Internet.
