The game is a prequel to Heroes of Might and Magic V and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. The plot of the campaigns focuses on five main characters: Anwen, Godric, Fiona, Aidan, and Nadia, who command elves, knights, necromancers, demons and wizards, respectively. The protagonists are described as five lost children, whose lives have been destroyed by a “mysterious Demon Lord with very sinister motives”. This demon lord turns out to be Az Rafir, Nadia's father, who devised an insane plan to use a powerful artifact known as the Blade of Compulsion to open the gates to Shio's demon world and plunge Ashan into chaos. In Fiona's campaign, he worships the chaos dragon Urgash. In Aidan's campaign, it is shown that he began to use the Blade of Coercion out of ignorance. In Nadia's campaign, after realizing that her own father broke the lives of her and her friends, she decides to fight Az Rafir in his demonic form at the end of the plot.
