Rockstar has released add-ons to the game, distributing them through the online services Xbox Live, Games for Windows - Live, PlayStation Network and as part of the disc edition of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.

In the first week of sales, over 6 million copies of the game were sold for a total of $ 500 million, of which $ 310 million was on the first day, with production costs of about $ 100 million. For a record sales result in the media industry in the first day and first week, GTA IV was included in the Guinness Book of Records.

Games of the Grand Theft Auto series are distinguished by their freedom of action, including free movement over vast territories, the ability to steal any vehicle they meet, and kill any NPC they see. When creating GTA IV, the developers reworked many existing aspects and included several innovations.

As in previous games in the series, the hero will have to carry out mainly criminal tasks issued by various playable characters. Successful completion of these missions opens up the possibility of passing further missions, new areas of the city, new types of weapons, etc.

In addition to the main 88 story missions in the game, by tradition, there are additional secondary tasks, the number of which has significantly decreased compared to the previous games in the series, however, their completion remained necessary for 100% of the game's completion: police missions, unique jumps, car theft missions, races, assassin missions, search for hidden objects (in this case, pigeons) and a number of others.

The mechanics of gunfights and hand-to-hand combat have been re-created for GTA IV. First, there was a cover system similar to Gears of War. The player character was able to take cover behind the nearest possible obstacle and fire from there. With the help of automatic aiming, you can pre-capture the enemy and shoot, leaning out, aiming. Along with this, "blind fire" is allowed. Hitting different parts of the body has different results: the player can injure the enemy in the hand, knock out the weapon, shoot in the leg, which will lead to the fall of the enemy, or can destroy the target with the first hit in the head. Aiming within the body is integrated into automatic aiming, it is enough to slightly deflect the analog stick of the gamepad.
