Players take on the role of a hunter named Takkar, he is the last representative of the destroyed tribe, who travels the land of Urus in search of revenge for his people.

Since Far Cry Primal takes place in prehistoric times, the modern weapons and vehicles typical of the Far Cry series are not present in the game. Only melee weapons are available to players: spears, clubs, axes, and short-range weapons such as bows. At the same time, it is not possible to buy it, players will have to independently create weapons using improvised items, such as wood and stone. As they progress in the game, they will be able to create more deadly and effective weapons. In addition to axes, spears and bows, Takkar can use a variety of tamed beasts against enemies, including saber-toothed tigers, cave bears and wolves. The tame owl serves as a scout for Takkar, allowing him to spot enemies from afar. If one of Takkar's pets dies, it can be brought back to life by finding and using a special item]. Takkar will lead the life of a Stone Age man: hunt animals, make tools and clothing from various materials, and also wage war with other tribes. In the land of Urus, there are different regions with different climates and different dangers for the player - for example, in the snow-covered cold areas, Takkar can freeze and must warm up by the fire.

For a complete immersion in the world of the game, all dialogues are recorded in a primitive language, based on Proto-Indo-European. They are supplemented with subtitles in Russian (for sales in Russia).
