NKVD officer Churkin arrives in the GULAG, located near Norilsk. He understands that he will not survive the next Stalinist purge and wants to talk to his former colleague, former military commander and dissident Lev Abramovich Isakovich, who was sentenced to death for anti-Soviet activities. When meeting with Isakovich, the latter first calls Churkin a bastard, but then agrees to talk about what prompted him to betray. Isakovich begins to tell Churkin about his service in the ranks of the Red Army. He recalls the heroism of his front-line comrades and the atrocities of the commanders, whom he openly condemns. Churkin, in turn, proves to Isakovich that all these actions were justified and necessary. The game represents Isakovich's memories and therefore the episodes are not presented in chronological order. The former military commander in not the most flattering terms recalls the Battle of Stalingrad, the breakthrough of the blockade of Leningrad, the relations of the Russians with the Polish partisans from the Home Army, the feat of a group of Soviet soldiers who managed with limited means to defeat the Tiger and bring it for study, an unsuccessful attempt to free prisoners of war from the concentration camp and, finally, about the battle for Berlin. In the end, having in his hands a list of the atrocities of the red commanders, and considering it his duty for the world to learn the unflattering truth, Isakovich tries to flee to the Allies, but is captured and sent to the GULAG. At the end of the game, a security officer comes to Isakovich and is going to shoot him, but Churkin kills the officer, gives the former military commander a book he wrote with the facts of atrocities, and tells Isakovich to tell the truth. The last shots of the game show Isakovich running through a snow-covered forest towards Norilsk, which can be seen in the distance.
