Alice: Madness Returns is a storyline sequel to the computer game American McGee's Alice. The game tells the story of Alice Liddell, a girl suffering from the emotional trauma caused by the death of her parents in a fire. Alice was discharged from a psychiatric clinic and during the game is living in an orphanage for mentally traumatized orphans under the care of Dr. Angus Bambi, while she continues to experience hallucinations. To get rid of mental trauma and find out the truth about her past, the girl again finds herself in Wonderland, in which a new evil has settled.
Alice: Madness Returns was developed under the direct supervision of American McGee as CEO of Spicy Horse. Although the concept and storyline of the game was created by McGee in collaboration with Robert John Berg, executive producer of the original American McGee's Alice, the game's design and content was entrusted to the Spicy Horse art team led by Ken Wong. As in American McGee's Alice, some of the main characters - Alice and the Cheshire Cat - were voiced into English by actors Susie Brann and Roger Jackson, respectively. The score was written by Jason Ty and Marshall Crutcher, while the composer of the previous game, Chris Vrenna, wrote only one song for Alice: Madness Returns. Alice: Madness Returns uses the Unreal Engine 3.5 game engine and PhysX graphics technology to accelerate physical effects and enhance the realism of the game world.
The game received both positive and negative reviews from major gaming publications. The appearance of the levels and game objects received a positive assessment from the majority of critics. The dullness and protractedness of many moments of the gameplay were noted as negative aspects.
