The program has two display methods: Arrangement View and Session View. In Arrangement View, composition creation occurs by arranging musical fragments (so-called “clips”) on a timeline (as in many other sequencers, for example, Steinberg Cubase, Logic Studio, Cakewalk Sonar). Session View allows you to play clips in a random, non-prescribed order and compose a composition in real time.

Live supports various audio output technologies (ASIO, Core Audio), audio plugins (VST, Audio Units) and Rewire technology. The program also has several of its own instruments, the necessary set of sound effects and a library of presets for them.
